The Artist & The Ranger

So what is Beltera and who on EARTH is Jules?

Beltera was born from the extreme desire of an artist to avoid writing her assignment while studying Conservation Ecology. It’s amazing what you can create out of thin air when you are in procrastination mode.

Ok so for reals… Beltera wasn’t really created out of thin air, it has been a very long time in the making. Jules left her little country home town in Victoria at the feeble age of 17 to study Fine Arts at university where among other things (like budgeting just enough to afford cask wine) she learnt to be free in her art . She also learnt, to her shock, that there is no such thing as good art or bad art, there is just art! “Wow!” Little Julesy thought! So off she went into the universe, degree under arm and a pep in her step, but she was heading in what seemed to be the opposite direction she should be.

Years later Jules found herself working in the depths of the Qld rainforest as a Park Ranger, fighting fires, planting trees, being a boss bitch on a chainsaw and having an all-out ball of a time. People would often ask her “But if you are an artist, why are you working out here as a ranger?” She never really understood that question or how to answer it, her heart was content immersed in the natural world and her soul was pleased with her ‘doing good’ in the world she felt as at home out there as she did painting in her studio.

Being a Ranger has taken Jules across Australia and the world, volunteering alongside Game Rangers in South Africa monitoring Rhinos, digging trenches and building tracks in the jungle alongside local village Rangers on the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Ginuea, chainsawing through forests to help rescue locals after cyclones in North Qld, camping under the stars while monitoring the croc infested wetlands of Cape York. If you ask, she will gladly tell you it is the best job in the world, bloody hard work and utterly inspiring!

So where’s the full circle? Well its right here. In late 2017 Jules made the difficult decision to take a break from her Ranger duties to study Conservation Ecology. Bolstered with the belief that further education would help her extend her reach in conservation and make an even bigger impact fighting the injustices our Mother Earth faces today. Sometimes you gotta dream big! Jules is currently studying part time while working on Beltera and travelling this big beautiful desert island with her lover man Dan.

Beltera came organically as a marriage of Jules’ two loves; art and conservation. She hopes to inspire others to make conscious choices in their day to day lives and do the right thing by this planet not just for future generations but for the planet herself.

There is hope and there is love in this art and we hope you spread that love, let it shine from your cheeks like sun beams to warm all that cross your path.

‘To be a conservationist in today’s world you must above all else be an optimist and you must have faith in humanities capability to do good. And I truly believe that when given the option, 99% of people do what’s right’ – Jules Holland
